File Manager
From WebHost Wiki
Image:Fileman.gifThis is where you can upload/move files and change permissions in a web based environment. You can access the File Manager by clicking on the File Manager icon in your cPanel.((Put over view screenshot here))
As you can see the file manager is split into two colums.
Contents |
Left column
On the left is a list of the files and folders in the current directory (users root folder when first opened). As you can see there are two folders listed at the top. The first is the current directory and the second allows you to create new folders. This is useful for times when no FTP client is available to do this. Upload files allows you to upload up to 12 files at the same time.

Below this is the actual list of files and folders in the current directory. You are able to create a new file using the "Create New File" icon at the top of the list of actual files.
On the right hand side of this column the size (in kB) of files, and the permission values for both files and folders are shown. ((show example of one))
Right Column
The right hand column is where the majority of the actual management is done. Various things will appear here depending on what is done in the left hand column.
At the bottom of the colum, the trash folder is visible. When you delete things through the File Manager they go here. They can be restored while they are visible there.

How to use the File Manager
It is relatively straight forward to use the file manager. Clicking on the name of a file or folder allows you to do many things to the item including
- Renaming
- Changing Permissions
- Deleting
- Copying to other folders
- Moving to other folders
Files can also be directly edited here. ((Put image of management functions here))
If you click on the icon of a folder then it will be opened. Clicking on the icon of a file however, will do the same as clicking its name.
To move a file, click on its name and then move in the menu on the right. Navigate to the parent directory for where you want the file moved to, then click on the name of the folder where you want the file to go.
File/folder permissions
- For more information, see main article: chmod
There are three main variables for permissions; read, write, execute. There are also three users for permissions; owner, group, world.
Using these it is possible to block certain types of access to the file/folder by various processes. For example you may want to allow full access (read, write and execute) to a file for a certain group. This is simple, just click the boxes that you want for the group you want.
